Built by a Bavarian watchmaker who taught himself architecture and then designed some of Bloomsburg’s most enduring buildings, including this one, his own home. THE STORY. In 1874, this brick Italianate-Victorian rose on East Fifth Street, a private residence built by Louis Bernhard, whose grandchildren would still own it more than a century later.Bernhard was born in Bavaria and arrived in Bloomsburg in 1858. By trade he was a watchmaker and jeweler, but he was also a working artist and a self-taught architect, a true Victorian polymath. His fingerprints are all over historic Bloomsburg. Bernhard designed the Lowenberg & Cadman block on Main Street and the Episcopal Church, then turned his eye to designing this house for his own family.
